Web Authoring
Stay away from Microsoft Frontpage! I heard good things about Adobe's GoLive software. Dreamweaver is by now the industry standard, an intuitive, user-friendly, powerful piece of software. The Macromedia website features many great resources including an online forum that comes handy when getting into tight spots.
Cascading Style Sheets
There are several resources on the web and a great deal of books as well. The following three resources I have used extensively and strongly recommend:
- Glish's site with real examples of CSS layouts,
- The already famous Zen Garden project,
- The great book "Stylin' with CSS" by Charles Wyke-Smith (a great add-on to the book is the companion website where everything covered in the book can be downloaded).
- Project VII: simply great.
Graphic design and photo "lab"
Obviously Photoshop, especially for photography. I also use Macromedia, err..Adobe Fireworks. Certain projects I have started in Photoshop and finished them in Fireworks, which just feels right for me. I cannot recommed Fireworks enough, especially for web work.
